History of Broomball

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

In the early 1900’s, Canadian street car workers used a small soccer ball and corn brooms to invent a new game. They called it broomball. The sport made its way to the US, and by the 1960s organized leagues were forming in Minnesota. The first state tournament took place in 1966. As broomball’s popularity spread to other Midwestern states, game rules evolved and team sizes were reduced from the original ten to six players. Today, broomball is played with aluminum sticks fitted with plastic, fan-shaped ends used to slide a grapefruit-sized ball across the ice.
